my friends and I, we don't got a plan. Just a destination sparkling on the darker edge of town. A place where we can keep drinking and if they play some songs I know I guess we're down. We get down. And up above us there's these souvenir kick drums hanging high. For a heart that won't stop beating or a skin that won't stop tearing I can't decide. They play Jimmy into Blink and my friends spill their drink. They play Nirvana into Mcbusted and we get adjusted. Hey Pauly, you said this place was punk. I've seen DJs pulled from decks for lesser crimes. He turns to me and laughs, says "we're fully over that, those sound like the olden times" Fuck it, I'm down with mixing sin and sonic till I vomit, but the disparity in dress sense only grew. How woke guys call it progress but guilting girls to wear less is nothing new. They play Bring Me into Slipknot, feel my s p i r i t drop. They play pressure into blame. Confidence to shame. And she will never trust again From dancefloors to bedrooms, the same chords that save you. This ain't a rescue, nu-uh. Comes back when the beat stops, the moment the bass drops From basements to rooftops, nu-uh. Trade the rest of our lives for one night alive And that's it. The whole tooth. We'd ask anyone not yet convinced to leave the room. Yeh now we've lost the doubters I'll say not all singers are saviors, they just sound righteous with the right sounding guitars. Well hallelujah. And there'd be a slogan, all caps. I'd get in printed on the tickets I'd advance: ALL WORTHY FORMS OF ART MAKE TO RECAPTURE YOUR FIRST HEARTBREAK, the rest is dance. They play 5sos into My Chem, I think they'd scare the shit outta them. They play pressure into blame. Confidence estranged. And she will never trust again. From dancefloors to bedrooms, the same chords that save you. This ain't a rescue, nu-uh. Comes back when the beat stops, the moment the bass drops From basements to rooftops, nu-uh. Trade the rest of our lives for one night alive

Damian bares his teeth, appraises the situation. He ain't leaving here alone tonight. Here comes the metaphor: The dancefloor is an ocean. The songs are storms and the bodies all floating, waiting for a rescue but i don't think he's the rescue dude. Damian, a shark on two feet Damian would fuck you in a heartbeat Damian is probably a problem Damian, partially inhuman So we move to some metalcore dirge and Damian knows most of the words. Metaphor got drowned by the second verse. I'd kinda lost interest but I guess the bar was the beachfront. I scored a tiny parasol and a party blunt. Watched the grey fin cross the water, less a savior, more a slaughterer. Damian would fuck you in the toilets Damian, a shark with two legs Damian is probably a problem Damian, partially inhuman lets say the cab rank is the airport sky cos all our friends are going, getting high Damian : "nobody loses, man" Damian doesn't do rejection Damian : "well nobody's forcing them" Damian, wat u tryna prove fam Damian, oh Damian, whatever you believe in Damian, oh Damian, all our friends are leaving now

All our friends are leaving, guess we are a couple now. A couple of loose threads. Tie us together, straighten up and sober. The camera never lies but yr body language tries like: check out the bar staff, dressed up as the blink nurse. This is yr heritage. We are all kick skins, painted up and broke in, hanging round like souvenirs. Headlights, headlights won't protect you from the night, just illuminate the signs in front of you. Headlights headlights, still rely on open eyes, just illuminate the signs to our one night alive. We'd need a ride. Wait. I said "just take me", she waved down a taxi. For somewhere we can go where there's noone else i'll know; so, we leave the theme park, drive down to the old dark. The goth where I grew up. Won't make the posters, living on the outskirts. Kinda thought that that was the point of it. Headlights, headlights won't protect you from the night, just illuminate the signs in front of you. Headlights headlights, still rely on open eyes, and you know why. Just illuminate the signs to our one night alive. Pull up across the street. Padding stashes under jackets, like 1 2 3 Headlights, headlights won't protect you from the night, just illuminate the signs in front of you. Headlights headlights, still rely on open eyes, and you know why. Just illuminate the signs to our one night alive.

We snuck in stashes in the lining of our jackets yeh our patter was perfect. Pat-downs just perfunctory. Past lines left standing hanging for the searches like it's random but it's never that random; there's always a pattern. Trapped on the tiles where the trauma grew, took one night alive to get a message thru, I can't shake the feeling that's true. But if you think it's gonna happen to you... I'd like to think i choose the best when I choose but now there's always the crawlers, always all those creepy dudes so cringe when it happens, yr evenings in tatters, you'll sleep when it matters and dream of how there's always a pattern; it's never that random. Trapped on tiles where the trauma grew, said you felt cursed then the speakers blew, so I can't shake the feeling that's true. But if you think it's gonna happen to you, then it's probably gonna happen to all of us. Yeh if you think it's gonna happen to you... and if you think it's gonna happen to you, then it's probably gonna happen to all of us. yeh if you think its gonna happen to you.

It's probably gonna happen to all of us I said, and she laughed something bitter and pulled up her dress. Wait. This ain't a scene where the two leads get laid, but it's something I'll take to my grave. She said, "you know my ex he's so into yr songs but we went a bit wrong if you get me. Booked yr band at his bar across town but he spat in my face as he hit me, so i probably won't come down" I just think my friends deserve better She's like; just fly casual, The actress and the actual. The bishop and the blue of the bruise on her leg and I said, "if i stay silent, I'm complicit to the violence" and "sometimes just shouting can slow down a spread" But i'm a friend so I did what she said, we got paid for our set and I hung with the ex. But I can't stop feeling that the words I'm not screaming must echo forever unanswered inside her head. I just think my friends deserve better.

about

The events in these songs take place roughly an hour apart from each other on a night out at (names of shitty bham clubs redacted). We are Too Old for nightclubs but evidently old enough to write concept musicals. Any references to persons living or dead is non coincidental.

One Night Alive is the first of 3 releases we have planned over the next 12 months. We're trying something different, d'you trust us? All of them are PWYW because we'd rather people got to hear us than not. BUT we can't realistically do this without yr monies, so we'd heartily encourage you to click the IBelieveInYrPoetry tab and subscribe to receive all 3 releases as they come, a special CD compiling them in April 2018, exclusive extra songs along the way, merch discounts and the knowledge that we'll sleep a little easier. xxxx
